A GIF maker that works the way you do

Most online GIF makers upload your video to a server, make you wait in a queue and stamp a watermark on the result. Video2GIF is different: the conversion engine runs inside your browser, so a short clip becomes a GIF in a few seconds and your file stays on your device. It works the same on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android – there is nothing to install.

Because we extract key frames first and encode afterwards, you can review every frame before downloading, delete shaky or blurry ones and rebuild the GIF in a click. That gives you precise control that you normally only get in desktop software like Photoshop.

Recommended GIF settings

A GIF stores every frame as a separate image with up to 256 colors, so size grows quickly with resolution and length. Use these starting points:

GIF maker – frequently asked questions

What is a GIF maker?

A GIF maker is a tool that turns a video clip or a series of images into an animated GIF – a small looping image that plays automatically in chats, social posts, emails and web pages without a play button.

How do I make a GIF from a video?

Upload the video above, drag the Start and End sliders to the moment you want, choose the size and frame rate, then click “Make GIF”. When it is ready, click “Download GIF”.

Is this GIF maker really free? Is there a watermark?

Yes, it is 100% free with no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many GIFs you create.

Do I need to install an app or create an account?

No. It works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox) on computers, tablets and phones.

Are my videos uploaded to your server?

No. Conversion happens entirely inside your browser on your own device, so your video never leaves your computer or phone. The only exception is the optional “Upload from phone” QR feature: the file you send is held temporarily so your computer can pick it up, and it is deleted as soon as it is received (anything left over is purged automatically within 24 hours).

How do I upload a video from my phone to my computer?

On a computer, click “Upload from phone”. A QR code appears. Scan it with your phone camera, choose a video from your gallery, and it is transferred to the open page on your computer automatically – no cables, AirDrop, email or app needed. On a phone the button is hidden because you can simply pick the video directly.

Can I make a GIF on my iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on your phone, tap “Choose video”, pick a clip from your gallery (or record one), make the GIF and tap “Share / Save to Photos” or “Download GIF”.

Can I make a GIF from photos or images?

Yes. Select several JPG, PNG or WebP images at once. They are ordered by file name and each one becomes a frame; choose how long each frame is shown.

Which video formats are supported?

Any video your browser can play: MP4 (H.264), MOV from iPhone, WebM, MKV, M4V, OGV and most phone recordings. Chrome, Edge and Safari also open HEVC/H.265 on most devices. Older codecs like AVI, WMV or FLV may not play in browsers – export them to MP4 first.

Is there a file size or length limit?

There is no hard upload limit because nothing is uploaded; the practical limit is your device memory. A GIF can contain up to 400 frames (for example 40 seconds at 10 fps). Phone-to-computer QR transfers are limited to 100 MB per file.

How can I make my GIF file smaller?

Lower the width (320–480 px is ideal for chat), reduce the frame rate to 8–12 fps, shorten the clip, choose “Small file (64 colors)”, or remove frames you do not need in the key-frame strip and click “Rebuild GIF”. Width and length have the biggest effect on file size.

Can I add text to a GIF?

Yes. Type in the “Caption text” box and the text is drawn in bold meme style at the bottom of every frame. You can change it and click “Rebuild GIF” without re-extracting frames.

Can I make a reverse or boomerang GIF?

Yes. Set Direction to “Reverse” to play the clip backwards, or “Boomerang” to play forwards then backwards in a seamless loop.

What frame rate is best for a GIF?

10–15 fps looks smooth for most clips while keeping the file small. Use 20–25 fps for fast motion, or 5–8 fps for the smallest files.

Does a GIF have sound?

No. The GIF format cannot store audio. If you need sound, share the original video or an MP4 instead.

Can I make a GIF that plays only once?

Yes. Set Loop to “Play once”. By default GIFs loop forever.
