Convert video to GIF without losing quality

A GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, so converting a full-color video always involves some color reduction. This converter picks a fresh, optimized palette for every frame, which keeps skin tones and gradients far smoother than tools that use one shared palette. For the sharpest result, keep the width at 480–640 px and the quality on “High”.

Why is my GIF bigger than my video?

Videos use modern compression (H.264, HEVC) that only stores what changes between frames. GIF uses decades-old LZW compression and stores each frame almost completely, so a 1 MB MP4 can become a 10 MB GIF. Trimming, lowering the width and frame rate, and removing frames are the most effective ways to keep the GIF small.

Recommended GIF settings

A GIF stores every frame as a separate image with up to 256 colors, so size grows quickly with resolution and length. Use these starting points:

Video to GIF – FAQ

How do I convert a video to a GIF?

Upload the video, set the start and end time, choose width and frame rate, then click “Make GIF” and download the result. It usually takes only a few seconds.

Can I convert only part of a video to GIF?

Yes. Use the Start and End sliders, or play the video and click “Set to current time” to mark the exact moment you want.

How do I convert a video to GIF on a Mac or Windows PC without software?

Just use this page in your browser. There is nothing to download – it works on macOS, Windows, Linux and ChromeOS.

Can I convert a video from my phone to a GIF on my computer?

On a computer, click “Upload from phone”. A QR code appears. Scan it with your phone camera, choose a video from your gallery, and it is transferred to the open page on your computer automatically – no cables, AirDrop, email or app needed. On a phone the button is hidden because you can simply pick the video directly.

Can I convert a screen recording to a GIF?

Yes. Screen recordings (.mov from macOS, .mp4 from Windows Game Bar or OBS, .webm from browser recorders) convert perfectly – ideal for tutorials, bug reports and GitHub READMEs.

Can I convert YouTube, TikTok or Instagram videos to GIF?

This tool converts video files on your device; it does not download from other websites. If you have the right to use a clip, save the file first and then upload it here.

What is the best size and frame rate for video to GIF?

For most uses 480 px wide at 10–12 fps is the sweet spot between smoothness and file size. See the recommended settings table on this page.

Why is my GIF larger than the original video?

GIF compression is much less efficient than modern video codecs. Shorten the clip, lower the width or fps, or choose a smaller color palette to reduce the size.

How long can my GIF be?

Up to 400 frames – that is 40 seconds at 10 fps or 80 seconds at 5 fps. Short GIFs (2–10 seconds) work best for sharing.

Why won’t my video open?

Some formats such as AVI, WMV, FLV or certain HEVC files cannot be decoded by every browser. Try Chrome or Edge, or convert the video to a standard H.264 MP4 first.

Is it safe to convert my video here?

No. Conversion happens entirely inside your browser on your own device, so your video never leaves your computer or phone. The only exception is the optional “Upload from phone” QR feature: the file you send is held temporarily so your computer can pick it up, and it is deleted as soon as it is received (anything left over is purged automatically within 24 hours).

Which video formats can I convert to GIF?

Any video your browser can play: MP4 (H.264), MOV from iPhone, WebM, MKV, M4V, OGV and most phone recordings. Chrome, Edge and Safari also open HEVC/H.265 on most devices. Older codecs like AVI, WMV or FLV may not play in browsers – export them to MP4 first.

Can I slow down or speed up the GIF?

Yes. Choose 0.5× for slow motion, or 1.5×, 2× or 4× for a sped-up or timelapse effect.
